The opposite of humility is wanton self-deprication,
the opposite of self-respect is selfishness;
and the point where these two great faults meet is narcissism.
Narcissism is the singularity at the center of all nihilistic thought and action.
It is the characteristic capsble of driving every vice to its greatest extreme; because it is self-hatred instead of repentance, and it is self-love instead of honor for the image of God.
Therefore, when unchecked, it can turn angry men into cruel monsters, greedy men into usurers, and lustful men into sodomites. And along with these evils, it turns kings into tyrants, workmen into malcontents, and prophets into profiteers.
Only when the Bride of Christ stops obsessing over her earthly self-image, and starts looking unto JESUS, in whom she is transformed, can she at last be made free of such things.
I have observed within the ranks of politically aware Christians a longing for the return of the “noble pagan” – the sort of principled men which at times have graced the pages of history in their honorable deeds and not been adversarial toward God’s children.
But it is the church’s own fault that these kinds of men have all but vanished, and she does not see how she herself is the source of this problem. For when she fornicates with the secular power, she loses favor with both God and men. She weakens herself morally, and she sows the seeds of resentment among the heathen, who already do not trust her. It would be enough to be hated simply because of the indwelling Christ, which is her calling. But instead, by whoring around in matters that are not her calling, she actually helps lay the groundwork for the most bloody empires to rise.
Corruption only works one way: toward greater corruption. The mixture of the holy and the profane is by definition corrupt, and can only ever dillute further. New holiness must arise outside of that cauldron and remain there if God is to reward it. The mixture of divine reality with earthly means always works toward the summoning of the beast, no matter what the initial intention. When evil is left to eat itself and holiness pursued instead, darkness ebbs and flows, yet is by-and-large kept at bay. But when good and evil (mixture) is pursued, nothing is left sacred, and all things fall inevitably into deep darkness.
New light shines in the hearts of those who leave this all behind, the eyes of whom are opened to the heavenly thing; but those who will not abandon their fornication with the world are judged as its citizens.
There is only one nation under God; and she bears not her own name, nor can her true form be perceived by carnal eyes.
In a day when the message of man’s church is to “rise up,” we truly need more than ever to humble ourselves before the Lord.
The working out of our salvation with fear and trembling is sustained by humbly yielding ourselves to God who desires to work IN us according to HIS good will and pleasure.
The second beast of Revelation 13 is one which looks like a lamb but speaks like a dragon. It is the very same voice of self-ascension “rising up out of the earth” (Rev 13:11) which beguiled Eve long ago.
If YOU are rising up of YOUR own volition, it is only the dragon who empowers you in any success. But those who humble themselves under the mighty hand of God will be exalted IN DUE TIME (1Pet 5:6).
The earth that the meek will inherit is the new one after HIS return – and He does not return for a self-asserting bride that has conquered the earth; but rather for a humble people who have at last allowed Him to fully conquer them!
We conquer the enemy by Christ’s victory in us, not by our own victory outside of us.
And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb
and by the word of their testimony,
for they loved not their lives even unto death. (Revelation 12:11 ESV)
This is the only true victory, and the only way that God’s people shall endure in the day of their greatest trial.
